Casino Confidential (2012) is probably one of the hottest documentaries about casinos that you can see on TV right now. I don’t really know how much of it is scripted and how much is actually real, but as a Vegas gambling man myself, I can tell you that many of the things you see there actually happen in real life. The show takes place at the Binions Casino, one of the oldest and most respected in Las Vegas. At the start of the show, you get a short background of the casino, which I happened to find extremely interesting, as I am also quite passionate about history.
But that doesn’t take too much time before we, as viewers, are thrown right into the thick of it all pretty quickly. The viewers basically see through the eyes of the casino staff as they have to handle all sorts of situations. Before I saw this show, I thought, like many others, that casinos just make bucketloads of money without having to do a lot of work. That’s because I just saw how willing most people are to part with their hard earned cash at slots and on tables, from the moment they hit Las Vegas. However, things are not quite so simple. In fact, taking care of a casino as large as Binions, with hundreds of slot machines and gaming tables, would be impossible without a huge staff.
Even the more open minded among us only think about paying the staff and making sure there are plenty of events in order to keep paying customers interested. However, not many of us realize the sheer competition in a place such as Las Vegas. The city is basically packed with all these amazing casinos and we gamblers sometimes have a very hard time choosing the right venue. This is why planning most events is usually much more important than we think. What’s more, the series showed me just how important it is to find the right staff members. And that is not limited to just hosts, upper management and those in charge. Even the little people, like the security staff or the dealers are extremely important.
For example, one of the episodes features a few guys who are in town for a bachelor’s party. The camera shows us how the security staff are keeping an eye on them, as a couple of prostitutes are about to dupe them into hiring them, which would almost surely land them in jail. The guys are drunk and don’t even realize that these are working girls. However, the security staff quickly realizes the danger and asks the two girls to leave. This ensures that the guys keep their freedom and can continue gambling with no care in the world. This fact alone has showed me how much casinos are taking care of their paying customers and it actually made me feel more important. A lot of hard work goes into making sure a casino remains profitable and I’ll be sure to keep that in mind the next time I go to Vegas.
